Experienced registered pilots ensure that seagoing vessels enter and leave ports as safely and efficiently as possible. In the Netherlands and the Flemish ports along the Scheldt. Day and night. In all weather conditions. Supported by well-trained staff. This is how we contribute to a safe port.

For a registered pilot, no two days are the same. You sail not just one, but hundreds of vessels, all with different sailing and maneuvering characteristics. You advise various people of diverse nationalities every day. This sometimes requires adaptability and empathy. But above all, the work of a registered pilot is so rewarding because it demands a lot from you. You know it yourself: "parking" something as difficult to control as a large ship is an art in itself; the last 500 meters to the dock are often more critical than 500 miles at sea.

About the course

The Dutch Pilots' Corporation is an educational institution recognized by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW). Its Registered Pilot Training: Master in Maritime Piloting (OTR:MMP) program was accredited by the Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organisation (NVAO) at the higher professional education (HBO) level in February 2014. This means that upon successful completion of the program, you may call yourself a Master of Science. The program is intensive, varied, and practice-oriented, and aims to produce professionals that bridge teams, shipowners, and society can rely on.

To participate in the training you must have at least:

  • Certificate of Competency for First Mate All Ships

  • higher professional education diploma

  • BRM/MRM certificate

  • Marcom-A certificate

Looking to work as a pilot?

If you have the right qualifications and experience, you can apply for the program. Eligible candidates will proceed through the selection process.

Selection procedure

The final part of the selection procedure is the final interview with the Admissions Committee. This committee advises the educational institution's board (Institution Board) based on the results of this selection procedure. The Institution Board then decides who may participate in the program.

Choice of a region

The registered pilots operate in four regions: North, Amsterdam-IJmond, Rotterdam-Rijnmond, and Scheldemond. Each region has its own challenges and dynamics. At the beginning of the selection process, you can indicate your preference for the region you would like to work in after completing the training. The training lasts 13 to 14 months, depending on the region in which you complete the training. The program has four phases.

Dutch Pilotage BV

In addition to the registered pilots, there is also a support company. This company is called Nederlands Loodswezen BV (NLBV). At NLBV, employees are available 24/7 to assist the registered pilots in their work. Nederlands Loodswezen is not only looking for registered pilots but also for people who want to work for the support company. This includes people for our pilot vessels and tenders, pilot service coordinators, mechanics, secretaries, IT specialists, HR staff, and our finance department.
